Brake Pad Replacement Guide
Brakes are the one system on your car where deferring the work is genuinely dangerous. The good news is that pad replacement is straightforward, quick and, done at the right time, inexpensive.
How long do pads last?
Typically 25,000 to 40,000 miles for front pads and 40,000 to 60,000 for rears. Heavy urban stop-start driving can halve those figures. New pads start at around 10 to 12mm of friction material. Most manufacturers specify replacement at 3mm, and we would recommend acting at 4mm rather than waiting.
What the noises mean
A high-pitched squeal on light braking is often a wear indicator or brake dust — annoying but not urgent. A harsh metallic grinding means the friction material is gone and the backing plate is cutting into the disc. That turns a £120 pad job into a £300 pad and disc job very quickly.
A rhythmic pulsing through the pedal or steering wheel under braking usually means the discs have run out of true or have uneven deposits. A spongy pedal that sinks towards the floor points at air in the system, moisture in the fluid or a failing master cylinder — get that looked at immediately.
Do I need discs as well?
Not automatically, and anyone who says otherwise without measuring is guessing. Discs need replacing when they are below the minimum thickness stamped on the hub face, when there is a pronounced lip on the outer edge, when they are deeply scored, or when they are warped. We measure with a micrometer and show you the reading.
Always replace in axle pairs
Pads should be replaced across an axle, never one side. Different friction levels left to right cause uneven braking and pull under heavy stops.
Brake fluid matters more than people think
Brake fluid is hygroscopic — it absorbs water from the air. Water lowers the boiling point, and on a long descent that produces a soft, fading pedal exactly when you need it least. Change it every two years regardless of mileage.
What is a fair price?
For a typical family hatchback, front pads fitted mobile start from around £60 labour plus parts. Front pads and discs together are usually £120 to £160 labour plus parts. Premium German models and vehicles with electronic parking brakes cost more because of the additional diagnostic work involved.
Bedding in
New pads and discs need bedding in. We carry out a series of progressive stops before handing the car back, and we will ask you to avoid harsh braking for the first 100 miles so the friction material transfers evenly.
