Common Mercedes Diagnostic Faults Explained
Mercedes build genuinely durable cars, but certain platforms have well-documented weak points. Knowing them saves a great deal of diagnostic time and money.
Airmatic and Airbody suspension
On S-Class, E-Class and ML platforms, air suspension faults are common past 80,000 miles. Symptoms are the car sitting low on one corner overnight, a suspension warning message or a constantly running compressor. The compressor itself often fails after being overworked by a leaking strut, so replacing the compressor alone rarely fixes it. We pressure test the system to find the actual leak.
Camshaft adjuster and timing faults
The M272 and M273 petrol engines are known for balance shaft and camshaft adjuster wear, producing timing correlation codes and a rattle on start-up. This needs proper live-data verification of actual versus specified cam timing before any work is quoted, because the repair is significant.
Glow plugs and diesel starting
On OM642 and OM651 diesels, extended cranking on cold mornings usually means glow plugs. The complication is that glow plugs seize into the head and snap on removal. It is worth doing at the first sign rather than after a winter of neglect.
SBC brake system
Certain W211 E-Class and R230 SL models use the Sensotronic Brake Control system. When the pump reaches its cycle limit the car warns and eventually restricts braking. This needs proper diagnostic interrogation of the SBC counter, not guesswork.
NOx sensors and AdBlue
On newer diesels, NOx sensor faults produce warnings threatening a start inhibit after a countdown. There are usually two sensors, and the fault code will not always tell you which one — live data comparison across both is the reliable way.
Command, SAM units and phantom drains
Multiple unrelated electrical faults on a Mercedes very often trace back to a single water-damaged SAM unit or a failing control module keeping the CAN bus awake. If your battery flattens over a few days, a current draw test is the right starting point, not a new battery.
