BMW Timing Chain Issues: What to Listen For

24 March 2026 5 min

BMW timing chains are designed to last the life of the engine. On a handful of specific engines, they do not — and the consequences of ignoring the early signs are severe.

The engines to know about

The N47 diesel, used widely in the 118d, 120d, 320d and 520d from roughly 2007 to 2014, is the most notorious. The chain sits at the rear of the engine, so replacement requires gearbox removal — which is why it is expensive and why so many were left too long.

The N20 and N26 four-cylinder petrols suffer chain and tensioner wear on earlier examples. The N63 V8 has its own set of well-known timing and valve stem issues.

What to listen for

Start the engine from cold with the bonnet up and stand at the rear of the engine bay on an N47. What you are listening for is a rattle or whirring like a diesel injector but coming from behind the engine rather than the front. It is loudest for the first few seconds after a cold start and often fades as oil pressure builds. That fading is exactly why people convince themselves it is nothing.

Other warning signs are a timing correlation fault code, rough running, extended cranking and metallic swarf visible on the sump plug magnet at oil change time.

Why acting quickly matters

A worn chain stretches, the guides wear through and eventually the chain jumps a tooth or snaps. On an interference engine that means valves meeting pistons, which is engine replacement territory. A planned chain replacement is a significant bill. A snapped chain is a much bigger one.

What we do

We assess the noise, read timing correlation live data, inspect the sump for swarf and give you an honest view of how urgent it is and what the repair costs against the car's value. Chain replacement on these engines is workshop work — we recover the car, do it properly with full kits and correct locking tools, and return it to you.

The prevention that actually works

Oil changes every 8,000 to 10,000 miles rather than BMW's long-life intervals, using correct-specification oil. Chain wear is overwhelmingly an oil condition problem, and long intervals on short urban journeys are what kills them.
